Super Bowl Predictions

By: Staff Reports

Paul Abramowitz, sports slot editor: Patriots, 31-17. "Tom Brady's passing game will soften the Eagles' defense early, then MVP Corey Dillon will punish the Birds in the second half."

Bob Aube, sports copy editor: Patriots, 24-13. "The Patriots will put pressure on the Eagles by scoring first, as usual, and the defense will keep Donovan McNabb from making any big plays."

John Baldacci, Maine governor: Patriots, 20-14. "The Patriots put their fans and their team first, and their character and spirit will continue to make them the dominating force on the football field."

Jay Baltes, sports assistant: Patriots, 51-50. "MVP Troy Brown will score a touchdown on offense, defense and special teams. Tully Banta-Cain will deliver a career-ending injury to Terrell Owens on the last play of the game."

C.J. Betit, sports assistant: Patriots, 3-2. "A freak snowstorm blankets Florida, giving the game the proper ambience for two cold-weather teams. Vinatieri hits one from 50, and the heady Brady steps out the back of the end zone as time expires to preserve the win."

Paul Betit, hockey sports writer: Patriots, 24-14. "Vinatieri doesn't have to kick a last-second field goal to win it for a change."

Tom Chard, high school sports writer: Patriots, 24-17. "Without a healthy Terrell Owens, I don't see the Eagles having a real chance."

Susan Collins, U.S. Senator (R-Maine): Patriots, 31-17. "T.O. is going to get K-O'd."

Eric Conrad, Managing Editor: Eagles, 24-19. "My head says the Pats. My mom says the Eagles."

Jack Cosgrove, University of Maine football coach: Patriots, 31-20. "No question. No doubt. I'm a Patriots fan and believe in them all the way."

Dan Dinsmore, Assistant Managing Editor/Sports: Patriots, 33-17. "I'm amazed at how well Bill Belichick prepares his team. After tonight the Patriots will deserve to be included among the all-time greats. Enjoy it Pats fans because next year it's the Bengals' turn."

J. Sloan DuRoss, Olympic rower from Maine: Patriots 20-17. "Vinatieri kicks the game-winner (again) as the Pats get one last hurrah before Bill Belichick's assistants go on to head coaching positions."

Jill Duson, Portland mayor: Patriots, 27-20. "I am from the Philadelphia area and have been an Eagles fan most of my life, but I'm sorry to say that my loyalties have been supplanted by the Patriots. I've been in Maine 20 years and after the days of the Polish rifle (Ron Jaworski) I became a Patriots fan. I hope it will be a close game."

Charlie Eshbach, Portland Sea Dogs President and General Manager: Patriots, 27-10. "The Patriots have demonstrated they play great offense and great defense. And Adam Vinatieri is good for at least two field goals."

Dave Eid, WGME Channel 13, sportscaster: Patriots, 27-10. "Just a far superior team."

Deirdre Fleming, outdoors writer: Eagles, 34-31. "The Eagles will win because they - and McNabb - have more reasons to want it bad and the Pats have far more to lose, like: face, dynasty, last hurrah."

Lee Goldberg, WCSH Channel 6 sportscaster: Patriots, 31-7: "I don't think the Eagles match up well with the Patriots in any phase of the game."

Jeannine Guttman, Executive Editor: Patriots, 24-10. "Patriots get three touchdowns and a field goal; Eagles get one touchdown and a field goal. The turning point of the game: McNabb keeps throwing interceptions. The Patriots' offense, once again, is underestimated. And a dynasty is born."

Glenn Jordan, sports writer and son of a football coach: Patriots, XXX-XIII. "So Belichick got his start breaking down film for his dad? I used to draw up plays for my dad, mostly involving a double reverse with a pass back to the quarterback. Only if the Eagles pull one off will they win."

Norm Karkos, WMTW Channel 8 sportscaster: Patriots, 34-17: "The Pats' secondary will make the difference. I also believe fellow University of Arizona alums Bruschi and Miller will come up big."

Herb Ivy, "The Captain," WBLM morning host: Patriots, 27-17. "BLM will be hosting its third Super
Bowl rally on Monument Square this spring!"

Rachel Lenzi, high school sports writer: Patriots, 31-10. "Philadelphia doesn't have the poise that New England has from prior championship experience and will be overwhelmed by both the atmosphere and the Patriots."

Mike Lowe, Patriots beat writer: Patriots, 31-17. "Word is Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell is about to be classified as an endangered species. What was he thinking? As if the Patriots' defense needed any extra incentive. Repeat after me - dynasty."

Jenn Menendez, University of Maine sports writer: Patriots, 27-20. "Stock the cooler. Polish the TiVo remote. It's gonna be a long night, a close game, but the Pats will prevail in the end. Clutch plays in the last quarter will decide it."

Bill Nemitz, news columnist: Patriots, 31-27. "Pats trail by 27-24 deep into the fourth quarter, but MVP Brady wins it with an 80-yard touchdown drive."

Patrick Nero, University of Maine Athletic Director: Patriots, 27-17. "Pats get a late touchdown to pull away."

Stefanie Pemper, Bowdoin College women's basketball coach: Patriots, 34-24. "The Patriots are the more talented team and the more experienced/mature team."

Dave "Shoe" Schumaker, Operations Manager for WJAB and morning host of the "Morning Jab": Patriots, 28-14. "The Pats are the most well-rounded team in football."

Olympia Snowe, U.S. Senator (R-Maine): Patriots, 27-17. "While the Philadelphia Eagles are a skilled and exciting team, they simply cannot match the Patriots' experience, toughness and selfless play. With all the time I spend surrounded by partisan bickering in Washington, it's refreshing to see a Patriots team committed to a common purpose."

Kevin Thomas, baseball writer: Patriots, 23-17. "The dynasty hype might sink some teams. Not one coached by Bill Belichick."
