Van Buren port gets backing from Snowe

Sen. Olympia Snowe has urged the commissioner of the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Protection to consider a petition that would allow a commercial port of entry in this Aroostook County town.

Commercial haulers without a permit to cross at Van Buren must drive more than 300 miles round trip to Houlton, the nearest commercial port to be inspected.

"I urge you to give the request for a commercial port of entry in Van Buren your most serious consideration," Snowe wrote in a letter to Commissioner Robert Bonner.

Van Buren is currently able to inspect and pass permitted commercial vehicles in addition to rail cars, personal vehicles, seaplanes and snowmobiles.
